Make a Blanket

Whether you are creating one blanket, are participating a blanket making event, or become a regular volunteer, we are so happy you are interested in becoming a Project Linus Blanketeer!

Project Linus is based on bringing security and comfort to children in crisis, so please follow our guidelines to make sure your blankets are made with quality, love, attention, and care!

WELCOME NEW BLANKETEERS!

You don’t need to be an expert to create and donate blankets for Project Linus, but we do hope that you work carefully and thoughtfully while making your blankets!

Blankets should be NEW, clean, washable and good quality materials.

Make blankets the size, pattern, color, quality of materials and workmanship that you would be proud to gift to your loved ones.

Blanket Sizes

We value a variety of size blankets, but recommend (approximately)

Baby: 36″ x 36″
Child: 40″ x 60″
Teen: 45″ x 70″
Twin Bed: 66″x90″

Materials

Blankets should be made from 100% cotton, flannel, polar fleece, or acrylic yarn. Do not use materials that may shed.

Blankets should be soft, colorful, cheerful, and cuddly! Please avoid using holiday themed patterns.

Odor Free

Please only donate blankets that are free of contaminants, pet hair, and odors.

We cannot accept blankets smelling strongly of perfume, detergent, fabric softener, mold, mildew or smoke.

Quality Check

If you are working with groups, we appreciate if you double check blankets before donation. If blankets aren’t quite Project Linus quality, animal shelters like Lowell Humane Society or MSPCA often accept bedding donations.

No Sew Fleece Blankets

We are so grateful for the ease of no sew fleece blankets, and the comfort it brings so many Project Linus recipients, especially in hospitals and shelters where a cozy warm hug can really make a difference.

Please be sure to use the following guidelines when making your fleece blankets:

  • Use high quality fleece. Anti-pill polar fleece or blizzard fleece will be easy to cut, tie, and will last through machine washing. Do not use thin or stretchy fleece – like the material in some no sew kits – they will not make make a cozy blanket that can last.
  • Trim off the selvage on BOTH sides of your fabric before making a blanket. Selvage is the inch or so of fabric on either side of the material that is used in manufacturing – it may have words running along the side, be a different color, have small perforations, be a little curled, or thinner than the body of fabric and runs along the left and right side of the fabric. Cut it right off!
  • Use only one layer of fleece. Double layer fleece blankets tend to be more difficult to make nicely, and we often have to take them apart. Single layer blankets are just as cozy and appreciated, and sometime all that is accepted by our partners!
  • Do not tie fringe knots too tightly or too close to the body of the blanket – the blanket will bunch up if knots are tight. You don’t have to tie knots at all, there are options to can cut or create a decorative fringe without knots!
